Dolores progress

I got a good bit of work done last night!

I started out by first off – fixing my ceremonial Leia belt. I got it out to take a photo last night and discovered one of the button covers on the conchos had popped off and nowhere was to be found. First time that’s ever happened with any of my Leia belts. Thankfully I have a gazillion extra of those button covers, so I called up dad and asked him how he originally glued these on — just hot glue! So I got that reattached, and these are ready to go for New Year’s:

Then onto Dolores work. I barely took any pics at the beginning, though – so instead, enjoy this one extreme close-up of Luna while I talk through the start of last night’s work:

I started out by making a really simple little bustle – just a piece of my leftover quilted cotton fabric (from my Tightrope Walker petticoat), pleated and attached to a square of the same fabric. All just pinned together – nothing sewn yet. I got that pinned on and the skirt repleated around it to see how it was going to look… and then I decided I really couldn’t tell til I had a semblance of a bodice to compare it to.

So I started on the bodice. I had a pattern that was basically the right shape – just needed a few alterations – remove a few seams, etc. So I made a mock-up out of some leftover black material, tested out how it was going to work with the seams removed in the front (and darts in their place), and it worked well so I moved on to cutting it out of the real fabric, intending that to be my lining once I got the fit right.

Unfortunately I realised that I still needed a few tweaks that was going to require me to cut it out again — namely, I completely failed to notice that this pattern didn’t have a full armscye. AND I realized I was going to have to get rid of a seam in the back, mostly just because it was too big and taking those seams up made that one pattern piece disappear LOL So I recut the whole back as well.

NOW I finally have some pics.

Even with the eliminated seam and losing some width, it was still a little too big once I put it back on the form.

Everything just pinned together, including the darts in the front.

Sewed everything together so I could get a better look. Put a belt on it, too.

Pretty happy with it so far. I will probably cut it again one more time for the lining, since I have extra fabric and can do that. Moving right along!

And yes, I am avoiding Bespin Leia. I said I’d get started on it after Tightrope Walker, yet here we are, me working on something else again.
